لأكثر من ألف عام واصل الفرس القراءة والاستماع لهذا العمل النادر الذي وجدت فيه الملحمة الوطنية الفارسية شكلها النهائي. هو تاريخ ماضي إيران، مسجل على شكل شعر. ومع أن النص كتب قبل أكثر من سنة، إلا أن هذا العمل واضح وسهل لفهم القارئ في العصر الحالي. أسماء والقاب وعناوين كثيرة طالت الشاعر الفارسي العظيم الحكيم ابو القاسم الفردوسي عبر العصور فهو «هوميروس ايران» و«ابو الشعر الفارسي» و«محي ثقافة ايران ولغتها» و«الفنان الاغر» و«شاعر الحرية» و«اعظم شعراء الدنيا»، والقاب اخرى تجعلنا نحار في سبر حقيقة هذا الشاعر الكبير وعظمته، فالفردوسي حقاً هو الفردوسي! فما قصة هذا الشاعر؟ الحكيم الفردوسي هو ابو القاسم منصور بن حسن بن شرفشاه، مشهور بالفردوسي لانتسابه الي كلمة «فردوس» بمعني البستان. ثمة هالة من الابهام والاسطورة تلف حياة هذا الشاعر كما هو شأن العظام، ولكن وفقا للاشارات الواردة في شاهنامة الفردوسي فان تاريخ ولادته في اواخر العقد الثالث من القرن الرابع، وينحدر من عائلة من طبقة الدهاقين او الملاكين من قرية اسمها «باج» في نواحي طبران في طوس حيث كان ذو املاك وضِياع واموال.
وطبقة الدهاقين علاوة على قدرتها الاقتصادية فهي ايضا حامل وحافظ للسنن والرسوم والتقاليد الايرانية الاصيلة وناقل للاخبار والروايات والقصص والاساطير الايرانية القديمة. فهي تتمتع بثقافة خاصة وفكر اصيل. أمضى الفردوسي سنوات شبابه في تتبع اخبار تاريخ ملوك ايران وسيرهم المتناثرة في المصادر المكتوبة ولاسيما الكتاب البهلوي «خوتاي نامك» او «خداي نامه» والذي ترجمه ابن المقفع الى العربية في القرن الثاني الهجري تحت عنوان «تاريخ الرسل والملوك» وكان مأخذاً اساسيا للمؤرخين المسلمين فيما بعد كالطبري والدينوري والبيروني والثعالبي. كما قرأ الفردوسي الشاهنامات النثرية السابقة كشاهنامة ابو المؤيد البلخي وشاهنامة ابوعلي البلخي وشاهنامة ابو منصوري.
